Welcome to the ultimate guide to beauty balms. You'll find everything from drugstore BB creams to luxury brands in this guide: I will cover the basics of BB, the brands available, and where to find them. I created this guide during my own research for beauty balms.
Their increased popularity over the last year or so has resulted in an explosion of options on the market. Luckily, because these products have become so popular, they can now be found at just about any price point. I hope that this guide makes your search for the best BB a little bit easier! • First, we'll define the term 'BB' and discuss what these creams do • second, we'll look at drugstore brands • third, high-end department store brands • then we'll discuss the most popular Asian brands on the market • and finally, we'll look at the best BB alternatives. Not sure what I'm talking about? If you're interested in low-maintenance beauty products, skincare, and on-trend makeup, you've come to the right place.

Foundation + Skincare = BB Cream BB (or B&B) stands for blemish or beauty balm. It originated as a protecting and regenerating cream for patients of dermatological laser treatment before becoming wildly popular in Asia and Southeast Asia (Japan, China, and especially Korea). This style of product has since spread to western countries and can be found in just about any department store or drugstore in the US. BB is the best parts of makeup foundation and facial skincare rolled into one easy-to-use product. The Benefits of Beauty Balms At the very least, BB creams should include: • A lightweight but highly pigmented foundation base • Moisturizer • SPF sunscreen (UVA/UVB protection) They can also contain: • Antioxidants • Anti-wrinkle ingredients (such as retinol) • Acne-fighting ingredients • Oil-control ingredients • Skin-whitening or bleaching agents BBs are tinted moisturizers with a kick.
They can be worn alone for lightweight coverage or under makeup as a primer. Many beauty balms are buildable, allowing for the camouflaging effects of concealer or the customized coverage of a buildable foundation. The major allure of BBs is their low-maintenance appeal.
Many brands are non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) and allow for coverage of blemishes and other discolorations. True BB creams allow for an elegant marriage of skincare and makeup: they give you the healthy look you want now while improving the actual health of your skin over time. 'Fresh Effects' Price: $13 – $15 Specs: • SPF 15 (broad spectrum) • Oil-free • Antioxidant: camellia sinensis leaf extract (green tea extract) • Moisturizers: glycerine, fatty acids • Skin Tone Corrector: laminaria saccharina extract (sugar kelp extract) • (From Olay): refreshes, hydrates, smooths, and protects skin; skin tone evener and brightener; sheer coverage Shades: 2 – Fair to Light, Light to Medium Where to Find It: Target, Walmart, Ulta, Drugstores (Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, etc.) Bottom Line: Good for oily skin, sheer coverage, and use as a primer. • Rite Aid may have a 'store brand' version of Garnier's BB Cream for about $10 - keep an eye out! • Rimmel London BB Cream has an SPF of 25 and is dermatologist-tested. It contains mattifiers and is probably best for combination skin or skin that is slightly oily. This BB comes in three shades (light, medium, and dark), and you can find it online, at Target, Walmart, or drugstores.
It's only $6 - $7 so it could be worth a shot if you have oily skin. • Aveeno Clear Complexion BB Cream has an nice, high SPF of 30 (broad spectrum), is oil-free, contains Aveeno's famous 'total soy complex,' and is one of the few BBs I've seen that is supposed to be good for acne or breakout-prone skin. You can find it online, at Target, Walmart, or drugstores. • L'Oreal Revitalift Repair 10 BB Cream is the only drugstore brand I could find that contains Retinol. I believe it's a UK product, so if you're in the US, you may only be able to find it online. This means the price in the US has inflated to about $50. • Cover Girl BB Cream: So, Covergirl had this product out, then removed it, then brought it back again.
